Machine Vision (Computer Vision)

What is Computer Vision?

Computer vision is the domain of machine learning that analyzes digital images, photos, or videos to gain a better understanding of the real world. Computer vision includes acquiring, processing, analyzing, and understanding digital images, with objectives such as object detection and recognition, anomaly detection, measurement, tracking, motion detection, and location prediction. Machine vision is one application area for computer vision, to support an industrial or practical process like product inspection, quality control, picking and sorting, employee safety monitoring, or personnel recognition.

Why is Computer Vision Important?

Computer vision provides image-based analysis to solve real-world problems like inspection, navigation, security, and process control, converting image data to a deeper understanding of the objects and situation within view, and providing a way to make decisions based on current or predicted states. Combined with other data and machine learning methods, computer vision can enable sophisticated processes like autonomous driving, automated manufacturing processes, remote inspection of distributed assets, and public safety surveillance systems.
